High performance vents
There are also some types of vent designed for very high levels of performance and / or more arduous conditions. There are two methods of construction that can be used if this is the case.
Machined from solid
The vent is usually machined from solid aluminium billet or plate, and nickel plated. It would have a mesh gasket for grounding though welding or soldering could be an option to guarantee shielding performance further. The open area of the vent is created by a drilled matrix of holes that utilises the waveguide beyond cut-off effect of holes that have a diameter approximately one quarter or less of their length.
Fully brazed/solder steel construction
Alternatively these types of vents may be fabricated from interlocking steel strips that are then fully brazed and then over plated with zinc or tin. This type of construction provides outstanding shielding performance particularly in the ‘H’ field or magnetic region
